After a 28-year-old woman named Kitty Genovese was murdered outside of her apartment, newspaper articles claimed that there were 38 witnesses to the crime, and not one of them did a thing to help her. This happened in 1964 and after, social psychologists started to study what is called the Bystander effect. The Bystander Effect describes a person witnessing a negative situation and it is said that the more people that witness this, the less likely anyone is to help.
But is this true? And what other information has come out of studying this psychology theory?
This episode will discuss what the bystander effect is, different types of bystander effects, experiments that have been done to test it and true crimes that have been witnessed by others that didn’t help out.
